What makes Eucalyptus and Tea Tree so helpful for allergy relief?

essential oils for allergy reliefWhen we use essential oils to support allergy relief and respiratory health, what exactly are we looking for?

We want essential oils that calm congestion, ease inflammation, reduce infection, and boost the body’s immunity so that we’re better equipped to deal with allergens and germs. It helps if they can reduce pain, too. (I used to suffer from allergies and I remember some painful headaches!)

There are a lot of essential oils that offer this kind of support. The ones I’ve found the most helpful contain high percentages of the components 1,8 cineole and terpinen-4-ol.

When I say “1,8 cineole,” Eucalyptus is the first essential oil that springs to mind. And when I say “terpinen-4-ol,” Tea Tree steps forward as though to say, “That’s me!”

Here are a few essential oils we can blend with Eucalyptus and Tea Tree for reducing allergies:

  • Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana)
  • Saro (Cinnamomum fragrans)
  • Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora ct. 1,8 cineole)
  • Sweet Marjoram (Origanum majorana)
  • Plai (Zingiber cassumunar)

Now that we know some good oil suggestions, let’s make an allergy reducing steam blend! I’m going to make this in a 5 ml stock bottle. I only want one drop of oil in my steam, so pre-blending the oils means I get a little bit of each oil in a single drop.

  • 15 drops Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus radiata)
  • 15 drops Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
  • 15 drops Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana)
  • 15 drops Plai (Zingiber cassumunar)

Or we could blend:

  • 15 drops Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus radiata)
  • 15 drops Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
  • 10 drops Saro (Cinnamomum fragrans)
  • 10 drops Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora ct. 1,8 cineole)
  • 20 drops Sweet Marjoram (Origanum marjorana)

All you have to do is drop your essential oils into your 5 ml stock bottle. When you screw on the lid, the orifice reducer snaps into place.

When it’s time to steam, use just one drop of your blend in a bowl of steaming water. Be sure to close your eyes, and lean over the bowl to inhale the steam for about one minute. You can enhance the effects by draping a towel over your head, to keep the steam concentrated. Make sure it’s not too hot, so you don’t burn yourself.

We talk more about how to blend essential oils based on their components in my FREE webinar, “Reduce Allergies Naturally.” The webinar will teach you five simple, effective blends, including an alcohol-free hand cleanser. You can get so creative when you know how to blend based on a little bit of chemistry!
